The Importance of  Underground Tank Maintenance

Buried propane tanks must be installed and maintained by licensed propane specialists for your safety.

In order to ensure the safety of your tank, Total Fuel Service recommends a routine tank maintenance check on your tank once a year. During the inspection, our licensed propane specialists will check the tank, the pressure regulators and so on.

In the case that your tanks are not well maintained, your buried tanks may become a hazard.

Leaks

Because an underground tank is buried, leaks in a tank can easily go undetected. Propane leaks are extremely dangerous, leaks must be identified and fixed as soon as possible. Annual inspection will ensure that any conditions that could lead to a leak are remedied before a leak is caused. Since propane has a strong odor, a leak may sometimes be detected if there is a large leak.

Corrosion

The biggest threat to underground propane tanks is corrosion. Since the ground is damp, buried tanks are very susceptible to corrosion. There are preventative measures that may be taken to prevent the corrosion of your tank. Total Fuel Service uses a protective covering called an anode bag. The anode bag will become corroded rather than your tank. To keep your tank protected it is important to routinely replace the bag.

Geohazards

Another risk that your underground tank faces is geohazards. The biggest geohazard that underground tanks may face in Connecticut is flooding. During our rainy seasons, Connecticut could experience light flooding. In the event the area around your tank becomes flooded, it’s possible for your tank to float out of the ground. Although this is a relatively rare occurrence, it’s best to be aware of the possibility.
